Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule Second Edition- (ADOS-2)

Two-day introductory workshop Thursday 26th & Friday 27th July 2018

(Advanced Course Thursday 6th – Saturday 8th December 2018 separate registration required)

Places limited to 20 participants

What is the ADOS-2?

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a semi-structured, standardised assessment of communication, social interaction, and play.  It provides a series of standardised contexts in which the individual’s social, communication and repetitive, stereotyped behaviours can be observed.  It has been designed to assist in the diagnosis of autism and pervasive developmental disorders and is suggested as a complementary instrument to the Autism Diagnostic Interview Revised (ADI-R).  Standardised toys and activities are used to present opportunities for social and communicative interaction with the examiner.  During these activities, observation of the individual notes the absence of presence of behaviours of interest. A diagnostic algorithm consistent with DSM-V and ICD-10 clinical diagnoses is generated.

Prerequisite Training

Prerequisite Training

For all our ADOS2 courses at Mindful there is prerequisite training required – the ASD Assessment Fundamentals, 2 day workshop.

At Mindful our training is supported by Department of Health and Human Services and our mandate is to provide high quality ASD training that is accessible and affordable for clinicians, particularly those working in CAMHS/CYMHS.  As our ASD training calendar is designed for mental health clinicians working with complex clients, we have made the ASD Assessment Fundamentals a pre requisite to the ADOS 2 training as it covers all the components of a comprehensive ASD assessment. This includes a comprehensive developmental history, consideration of collateral information and issues of comorbidity, differential diagnosis and formulation. The ADOS 2 is one component of an ASD assessment and we would like to ensure that all clinicians attending have a broad understanding of the complexities of ASD assessment. This workshop is presented by a tertiary ASD assessment team from either Monash or RCH and the cases presented include some degree of complexity.

Who is the training for?

Mental Health Clinicians, Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists, Paediatricians, Speech Pathologists, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists

Who provides the training? Deborah Sweeney

Deborah has been using the ADI-R and ADOS in complex, multi-disciplinary assessments for over 14 years and regularly trains health professionals in the ADI-R and ADOS throughout the Asia Pacific region.

What does the training include?

The two-day workshop provides an introduction to the ADOS-2 as an assessment tool, and is a first step in the process for establishing reliability.  It uses a mixture of large group lecture, demonstration, and scoring, as well as DVD demonstration of the ADOS-2. Training does not include the toddler module.

Prior to attending the workshop, you will be sent a pre-course information pack.  This will contain information about the venue, options for purchasing ADOS-2 materials, and some reading materials.  It will also include a DVD of two ADOS-2 administrations for you to watch prior to attending the course.  You will also be asked to do two practice administrations of the ADOS-2.  This can be done with any child, or as a role play exercise.  This task is to help familiarise yourself with the administration of the ADOS-2.  It is very useful preparation for the workshop.  Detailed information on this will be provided in the pre-course pack.  It is also required that you read the ADOS-2 manual prior to attending the workshop. Therefore to participate in this workshop, you will need to have access to an ADOS-2 kit. ADOS-2 distributors include:

06 August 2018 Deeta Kimber Tracking Better® Regulation Workshop - 6 August 2018

Tracking Better® Regulation Workshop
Monday 6th August 2018

Session 1: How I can tell when I'm stressed

10:30 to 1:00 (morning tea and lunch provided)

Session 2: How I can calm down

1:30 to 3:00

There’s lots of parenting information around about how to make kids resilient through learning self regulation, but when it comes down to specifics it can be confusing. This workshop starts with teaching the parents the science and practice of self regulation in themselves, so it’s much easier to teach it in their kids. Parents will learning to recognise and regulate their own stress and then start to think about the basics of how this can be taught to their children.

Session 1: Stress Regulation Learn the latest research on how our stress system works, how to recognise your own version of survival mode, including early warning signs, and how to use mindfulness and breathing techniques to get your head back together.

Session 2: Calming & Body Regulation Explore how to calm your body using different senses and activities. This is a hands-on workshop where you’ll be introduced to ‘sensory-speed-dating’ and figure out what works best for you.

About Dr Deeta Kimber

Deeta is a Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist who is passionate about teaching the science of stress so parents and carers can understand what is happening to themselves through the challenges of parenting.

She has worked extensively in regional Victoria, Melbourne Youth Justice & Adult Prisons and, more recently, remote indigenous communities in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

 ADOS-2 Advanced Course 2.5 days

Thursday 6th - Saturday 8th December 2018
