Mindful Seminar: School Refusal

What does the training include?

School attendance has been described as a key benchmark of functioning in children and adolescence. While school refusal (also known as avoidance) is often considered a semi-emergency in psychiatric settings given the lasting impact of persistent non-attendance on a range of child outcomes.  

In this seminar, school refusal will be defined and compared and contrasted with truancy, school withdrawal and school exclusion; and risk factors for school refusal will be summarised.  

Approaches to conceptualising school refusal will be described along with assessment techniques and tools. Consideration will also be given to an empirically based approach to intervention relevant to working with children/adolescents, parents and school staff.

This training workshop is designed for psychologists, speech pathologists, social workers, occupational therapists, mental health nurses, teachers, headspace clinicians, paediatricians, child & adolescent psychiatrists & trainees.
