What is the ADI-R?

The ADI-R is a semi-structured diagnostic interview to assess behaviours related to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The ADI-R typically takes between 90 minutes to 3 hours. The course is designed to teach clinicians how to administer and code ADI-R with parents/carers of children and young people with suspected autism.

Who provides the training?

Psychologist Deborah Sweeney has been training clinicians in the use of the ADI-R and ADOS-2 for many years throughout Asia and the Pacific region. Deborah was previously working in autism research at Monash University and now works in private practice providing consultation for complex presentations of autism spectrum disorder. Due to the intensive nature of this training the group is limited to 10 participants.

What does the training include?

During this two and a half day training, participants will:

  • Learn about the underlying principles of the ADI-R
  • Practice administration of the ADI-R in role play
  • Watch a variety of video administrations of the ADI-R and practice coding
  • Participate in the administration of the ADI-R with a volunteer parent/carer of child or young person with autism.
  • Learn how to code the caregiver’s responses during the interview.

Trainees will have the opportunity to conduct part of an ADI-R interview and receive feedback and coding advice.

Pre-reading materials and video link will be emailed 1-2 weeks before the workshop and must be completed before commencement of workshop.

For clinicians wanting to achieve research level reliability, Deborah offers the “Personal ADI-R Reliability Package”. This includes scoring an ADI-R video administration, submission of your own recording of ADI-R, feedback and certificate once reliability is achieved. This is a separate cost from the course for those who wish to pursue reliability.

Prerequisite training

To be eligible for this training participants are required to have completed the ASD Assessment Fundamentals and Co-occurring Conditions 2-day training (formerly "Complexities of ASD Assessment").

As our autism training calendar is designed for mental health clinicians working with complex clients, we have made the ASD Assessment Fundamentals and Co-occurring Conditions a prerequisite to ADI-R training as it covers all components of a comprehensive autism assessment. This includes a comprehensive developmental history, consideration of collateral information and issues of comorbidity, differential diagnosis and formulation. The ADI-R is one component of an autism assessment, and we would like to ensure that all clinicians attending have a broad understanding of the complexities of ASD assessment.

If you are working in adult mental health, completing both the Adult Autism Introductory online on-demand training and Adult Advanced Autism two-day training will suffice as the Prerequisite for the ADI-R workshop. For further information please see our Frequently Asked Questions website page.

What do participants say about the training?

“Deb was amazing - knowledgeable, great style of teaching/supporting/presentation. The interview with the parent was incredibly useful to my learning.” (Aug 2023)

“Clear education and discussion on the nuances of ADI-R. Discussion around the application of the assessment in diagnosis. Very well planned sessions” (Sept 2022)

‘Really well run and presented course. Answered all questions and many I didn't know I had. Loved how practical it was.’ (Feb 2024)

‘Some of the best training I have ever attended.’ (Aug 2023)
