What is the ADOS-2?

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a semi-structured, standardised assessment of communication, social interaction, and play. It provides a series of standardised contexts in which the individual's social communication, and repetitive, stereotyped behaviours can be observed. It has been designed to assist in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and is a complementary instrument to the Autism Diagnostic Interview Revised (ADI-R). Standardised toys and activities are used to present opportunities for social and communicative interaction with the examiner. A diagnostic algorithm consistent with DSM-V and ICD-10 clinical diagnoses is generated.

Who provides the training?

Psychologist Deborah Sweeney has been training clinicians in the use of the ADI-R and ADOS-2 for many years throughout Asia and the Pacific region. Deborah was previously working in autism research at Monash University and now works in private practice providing consultation for complex presentations of autism spectrum disorder.

What does the training include?

The two-day workshop provides an introduction to the ADOS-2 as an assessment tool and is a first step in the process for establishing reliability. It uses a mixture of large group lecture, demonstration, and scoring, as well as video demonstration of the ADOS-2.

Pre-course work including readings and videos to watch will be emailed prior to the training. This information will be assumed knowledge for the training.

In person training includes morning/afternoon tea and lunch.

This training does not include the Toddler Module; see Mindful Website for ADOS-2 Toddler Module training dates and information.

Prerequisite training

To be eligible for this training participants are required to have completed the ASD Assessment Fundamentals and Co-occurring Conditions 2-day training (formerly "Complexities of ASD Assessment").

As the Mindful autism training calendar is designed for mental health clinicians working with complex clients, we have made the ASD Assessment Fundamentals and Co-occurring Conditions a prerequisite to ADOS-2 training as it covers all components of a comprehensive autism assessment. This includes a comprehensive developmental history, consideration of collateral information and issues of comorbidity, differential diagnosis and formulation. If you are working in adult mental health, completing both the Adult Autism Introductory online on-demand training and Adult Advanced Autism two-day training is the equivalent prerequisite for the ADOS-2 Introductory workshop. For further information please see our Frequently Asked Questions website page.

You may also be interested in our ADOS-2 Toddler workshop, which directly follows this workshop on the 29th November 2024 (online). By completing the ADOS-2 Introductory you meet prerequisite requirements for this optional add-on. More information via this link.

What do participants say about the training?

“Appreciated the hands-on approach to the coding techniques for each module” (March 2024)

“Deborah was exceptionally good at explaining, elaborating, clarifying, and answering all queries and questions.” (Feb 2024)

“Opportunity to engage in robust discussion with other professionals and trainer and talk through different scenarios” (Dec 2023)
