Who provides the training?

Multidisciplinary specialist autism and neurodevelopmental assessment teams from a range of Victorian Infant, Child & Youth Mental Health Services (ICYMHS) & lived and living experience workers (LLEWs).

What does the training include?

This online training aims to provide a comprehensive grounding in the complexities of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessment. Following the training you should be able to identify autism in the clients you see and refer appropriately for further assessment. Alternatively, you may wish to enrol in further training in autism assessment such as ADOS-2 or ADI-R. This two-day workshop includes:

  • Exploration of integrating clinical ASD assessment with neuroaffirming practice principles
  • Videos of two assessments: Preschool/School-Aged and Adolescent
  • How to take a neurodevelopmental history
  • Differential diagnosis and co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Understanding language and social communication differences
  • Understanding differences in sensory processing
  • Formulation of complex cases
  • Providing neuroaffirming assessment feedback to families
  • Guidelines for report writing.

This workshop is a prerequisite to enrolling in the ADOS-2 and ADI-R workshops offered at Mindful.

Pre-reading materials will be emailed 1-2 weeks before the workshop. This information will be assumed knowledge for the training.

What do participants say about the training?

“Great use of break-out rooms for small group discussions, great having all the perspectives from different professions and experiences. I think this was great as (a) "Fundamentals" intro, with room for further upskilling once I have a chance to consolidate all the learnings from this training!” (Apr 2024)

“Accurate, strength-based information (…) backed up by research” (Mar 2024)

“Having access to videos of the diagnostic process was invaluable - it's one thing to read through a semi-structured interview sheet, and quite another to see it in practice. So grateful to the clinicians and families who consented to this.” (Mar 2024)

“Loved the sensory aspects and information about co-occurring mental health conditions.” (Mar 2024)

“Watching the videos of the parent interview and ADOS was phenomenal.” (Nov 2023)

“I feel more confident to screen for ASD in my general practice. I also feel more confident and empowered to present my opinion and advocate for a referral for assessment” (Nov 2023)

“The most clinically relevant & directly transferrable training I have ever done!” (Oct 2023)
